MADE TO PERSUADE

REFLECTION

Day 1

I had so many ideas at first, I found it hard to choose 1. My initial idea was a segregated laundry bag, that I did as my research task over the weekend. However, my mind completely changed when I got to class.

Based on the questionnaire, I decided to do something based on fortune cookies and horoscopes. Then the idea of tarot cards came to my mind. I then decided to design a set of playing poker cards combined with tarot- Gambling with Luck. But that idea as said by my tutor was too much.

If you snooze, it snows.

Day 2

As suggested by my tutor, I decided to design a set of cards with a word on each of them. My aim was to give people a little mystery and hope to begin their day with. I decided to add a little tarot history to add some reality to peoples fantasy.

In order to create my cards I referred to a combined project of a digital art and product design, where a set of 55 graphic designers and illustrators team up to create a deck of cards, where each card in this deck reflects the vision of its creator and shows his particular style and technique.

However, I did not want to be the one to do the fortune- telling, I wanted to give people to chance to create their own fortune- Create Your Fate

Day 3

I decided to pick my own tarot cards and attempt to read my own fortune. I picked one major Arcana card and two minor Arcana cards to act as a basis of my designs.

After developing my designs and adding texts to each card, My idea of presenting it changed after the crit. Since I was asking people to create their own fate and interpret the three words in whatever way they wished to interpret it, I decided to use a reflective sheet as a base of my cards instead of a typical crystal ball. This reflected base reflected the face of my customers and my cards reflected their fate.

Day 4 - Interaction Day

Today was the day of the interaction, it was the most interesting and productive day. So many people were so intrigued by my cards, As at first look it seemed like I was doing a tarot card reading, however the twist was that - My cards did not read the fortune, they just acted as the means for you to create your own fortune. People came and got a wide range and combination of words from my cards, what I liked and noticed that they enjoyed were the ways in which they interpreted it.

There was an instance where a newly wed man approached me and seemed to have gotten negative words but he completely transformed words like- cheating, betrayal, and departure into an optimistic approach to life.

I also encountered people afraid to look at the words as I noticed how we as humans tend to first think of the worst and land up on the worst possible outcomes.

I enjoyed watching people take pictures of their fates and also encountered some who did not want to know it. I had some people sitting with me and talking to me about their life almost as if I were a therapist.

All in all it was a great experience interacting with people from different age groups and areas of origin and beliefs.

RESEARCH

Tarot Cards

"The original purpose of tarot cards was to play games"

Unique Deck of Playing Cards

"From the two of clubs to the ace of spades, each card in this deck has been individually designed by one of the 55 selected international artists in his distinct style and technique."

What I like about this is the freedom to express, variety of methods and instruments, and the amount of creative imagination put together from all the designers hands and minds that goes into it – that is what makes this deck of cards so unique and admirable to me.

My personal favourite design was one by Jeff Rogers - it was the 4 of clubs. I like that he kept his outward or the "first look" so simple  - it consisted of the simple shape of the clubs symbol with play of digital art and designs styled by him.

Opposed to this, I also really liked Marcelo Schultz's designed card of the 10 of Spades. Unlike Jeff Rogers' way of keeping it simple an maintaining the original outline and signature shape of the 'club' shape , Marcelo made his design intricately detailed. Consisting of an overall complex figure but including miniature 'spades' creating the overall abstract- which is what I tried to do in all of my designs. Similarly, I made paintings based on the original cards and digitally scanned and edited them using repetition and deformation to create MY UNIQUE designs assigned and associated with my fortune words.

All of my designs were inspired by the concept of tarot cards having different meanings to it when upright and upside down, which is why all of my texts are in different positions and all of my designs work in either direction giving people the benefit of the doubt.

The Wheel Of Fortune

I chose the wheel of fortune at random, but as I looked into it, I began to understand it and it's implications. In the deign and imagery as well as the meaning and concept behind it.

All of my designs were inspired by the concept of tarot cards having different meanings to it when upright and upside down, which is why all of my texts are in different positions and all of my designs work in either direction giving people the benefit of the doubt.

"The wheel keeps on rolling, churning events in a ceaseless progression of ups and downs, either way freeing us from the past. No one can escape its cyclical action, which can feel somewhat terrifying -- no matter whether we are rising or falling. When one is balanced on top of the wheel."

My wheel of fortune design was based on this meaning and concept, the repetitive circles represent the motion of the wheel.
